Auggie's Classroom- Perimeter


Walt:: identify and use the perimeter rule to calculate the size of Auggie’s classroom.

I was able to identify the perimeter of August's classroom. I had to estimate the length of the classroom to find out the perimeter of the classroom.

Next time I will :

  • Use a irregular shape that has angles and longer lengths

Wonder-Language Features



Walt: recognize and understand specific language features.

I was able to understand different and new language features eg. hyperbole , idioms and proper nouns. I had to find out the meanings for each language feature in a group and find out the meanings and find examples. The language feature I had to do in my group was idioms.
I was able to listen carefully to the story and the words to find find out which part of the story was a language feature.

Next time I will:
Need to find out the meanings of language feature independently.

I had to work by myself and identify my errors in my work.  I had to ask I wonder questions and answer them by going on the internet and learning things about Precious McKenzie and then find my answer by re-reading the information.

I was able to use new words I have never used before in my acrostic poem.  I had to look in a thesaurus to find different words.  My news words that I have used are highlighted so you can see my new words.

Next time I will choose new words and use them in a different piece of writing.

I was able to go onto this website Diabetes for kids and answer these questions:

  • What is diabetes?
  • What are the symptoms?
  • How do you live with it?
I had to find the answers to these questions from the internet because I did not know much about diabetes but I now know a little bit more about diabetes.

Reflection
I was able to use a calculator accurately and learn some tips on this website 5 Tips on how to use a calculator accurately, 

I found it hard to use the calculator because I kept pressing the wrong numbers and had to restart my whole equation but then I found out that if I click CE ( clear error ) and click space again it will take me back to my number that I first put in e.g 15+14 then I clicked CE and then I click the plus button and then it took me back to 15 and then i put in 15.


Next time I will...

  • Use my knowledge in how to use a calculator accurately.

Walt: deliberately choose words to create an effect on the audience.

Reflection:
I was able to choose persuasive and emotive words e.g Cruel,because,hurt,so would you… to make the audience think deeper about why animal and pet abuse and cruelty is WRONG.

  • Choose different words that will create a different effect on the audience
  • Choose more persuasive words to put throughout  my speech

Matariki Celebration - Phases of the Moon



Walt: accurately identifying and organise phases of the Moon.

I was able to identify different Moon phases and link them together and put the name and the picture together.  I learnt that waxing means to get bigger and waning means to get smaller. Matariki is linked to these Moon phases because Matariki is the day after the winter solstice.

Next time I will

  • Look up at the Moon every night to identify what phase the Moon is currently in

Mini Investigation- Easter



Walt:  understand passing on messages is important so we understand why we celebrate.

In my group had to find facts and information about Easter because some of us didn't know much about easter.

I think that Easter is very important because it celebrates Jesus Christ's resurrection. I now know more things about Easter and can pass this information on to my parents and siblings.

I was able to find predictions from scanning the cover,title and blurb. I was able to predict what might happen in the story by reading the blurb and scanning it for keywords for the story.

Next time I will

  • Look for keywords that will help me make better predictions
  • Find more similarities on the cover
  • Improve my inferencing skills.

Quotation Marks


WALT:use a wide range of advance punctuation correctly.

I was able to identify what parts of my writing was speaking so I know when to use quotation marks consistently.


Next time I will have to know :
  • When the character/s are speaking.
  • Know whether the sentence is punctuated properly
  • Know whether the character is speaking or having a thought

I was able to summarise the most important information and link it back to the topic.  I had to find the most important piece of information from a document of ANZAC and choose which piece of information and estimate between wether it is important and relates to the topic or wether it is a good piece of information.

  • Remember to link the information back to the topic.
  • Choose the most important piece of information.
  • Find and summarise the information in my own words.

4 Word Poem




WALT:Experiment with new words to suit the writing purpose.

I was able to experiment with new word to suit the writing purpose.  I had look for some different and more interesting words and change some of the poems because they didn't make sense.

Next time I will change some of the words to year six words, use different nouns,use different verbs,adjectives and adverbs and I will make sure the words are ones that I haven't used before.

My Reflection
I was able to use a thesaurus to make my writing more interesting.  I had to change some of my poems because I didn't use a thesaurus.

Next time I will choose more interesting words and use precise language choices to improve my writing.

Camp MERC Certificate



I got this certificate for completing outdoor activities in the environment.
At camp I learnt how to look after myself and be organised.  It was tricky to get up on the giants ladder because every time I look down I felt a tingle in my back.  It was also tricky when I was abseiling because It made me feel like a was going to fall. I enjoyed rock climbing because with rock climbing you had to think where you were going to go  and what are you going to grab. I also enjoyed canoeing because you had to be organised and be in time with the person in front of you.  If I could I would change having to do sailing to surfing because I was really looking forward to surfing and also because everyone who did surfing said that it was so fun.

Next time I will try and be more confident in rock climbing because I didn't make it all the way to the top.

Reading-New Vocabulary



WALT:actively seek to extend my knowledge of new vocabulary.

My Reflection

I was able to actively seek new words and expand my word knowledge.  I had to find words in the book I'm reading for SSR (Sustain ,Silent ,Reading) and if I wasn't sure about a word I would write it down in my sheet and find out what it means and find a synonym.

Next time I will  have my post-it notes ready so I can write down my words and transfer it onto the computer and I will look for new words when I am doing my 45 letter sounds.

House Captain speech


Today I stood up in front of my house group Rata and gave a speech about being their house captain for 2017.  I demonstrated resilience by having a go and trying by best to be confident by sharing my speech in front of my house group and 3 other house groups .

My Reflection

I was able to edit my work and make sure it made sense and make some changes to the poem.  I was also able to change some spelling mistakes because Rosie told me that the spelling wasn't correct.

Next time I will 
  • Proof read to make sure my poem or any type of writing makes sense.
  • Have 1 wish and 2 stars.
  • To edit my work and us a dictionary to correct my spelling.
  • Use the feedback to help me edit my work.

Learning Reflection

I was able to write relevant ideas about myself like 'A netball defender'.  I had fun writing this type of poem because it is a simple poem about me.

Sometimes I found this a challenging because I had to think of things that represent me.  Next time I am going to try and think of more interesting words and ideas that only relate directly to me.

Statistics

Walt : interpret information from histograms and tally marks eg. medium, mode, range, mean

I was able to use the scores to make my histogram.

  • The range for first names scores was 4 to 20.
  • The range for last name scores it was 2 to 21.
  • The range for full name score 9-31.
  • The first name scores had smallest range. 
  • The last name scores had the biggest range.

The mode is the most common number that appears the most times.
The mean is the number you get when you add a set of numbers or data and divide it by the number of numbers. The medium is a number that you get from a set of numbers and you have to find the number in the middle and then that is your medium number.
I really enjoyed doing this and I would like to do this again but with a different set of numbers.

Spelling- 45 Letter Sounds



Walt: use different spelling patterns and strategies to increase my word knowledge.

There are 45 letter sounds in the English language. Sometimes these sounds are made by one letter and sometimes they are made by a group of letters together. Learning these letter sounds will help me spell unknown tricky words and increase my word knowledge.

10 Things You Need To Know About Me



Walt : use advanced punctuation

We have learning how to use bullet points correctly in my 10 Things About Me slideshow.  I learnt you need to :
  • Place the bullet point in the margin.
  • Use a capital letter after the bullet point.
  • If you have written a sentence, end it with a punctuation eg. fullstop.
  • Bullet points are used to create lists.
  • Find the bullet points icon on the right hand side at top of the tool bar called bullet lists.
  • You have to be in the text box to find the bullet point key.
Next time I will try and use bullet points in more of writing.

My Reflection:
This year I'm feeling anxious but excited for this year because I get the chance to try things that I haven't tried before.  I am looking forward to inter school netball & softball.  I  also am wanting to expand my knowledge of  math and learn more about roman numerals and percentages.

My goals this year are ...
  • to receive the Carolyn Osborne Trophy
  • to get 100 ticks
  • to become a peer mediator
  • to become a house captain.
